About Burberry

Burberry was founded by draper apprentice Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England, in 1856. The predecessor of the trench coat was the Tielocken that was worn by British officers during the Boer War in 1895. The equestrian Knight trademark was invented in 1901 with the Latin wording “Prorsum” meaning forwards. In 1911 the Norwegian Captain Roald Amundsen became the first man to walk on the South Pole wearing Burberry. Today’s popular trenchcoat was born in 1914 commissioned by the War Office with added epaulettes and D’rings. The Buberry checks became a trademark in 1920 and was first introduced as lining to the trench coats. Since then Burberry has been awarded two Royal Warrants. The company is today an internationally recognised luxury label.

Burberry’s mission and goals

The company mission is to help young people realise their dreams and potential through the power of creativity. Through empowering young people to use their intellectual creativity, that will help them to imagine and achieve their life goals. In short young people are helped to:

  • Build connections to family, friends and society at large
  • Develop the ability to reach opportunities in school, work and life

Corporate Responsibility

Burberry is included in the FTSE4Good Indices and has signed the UN Global Compact. A team of nine people work with Corporate Responsibility. The products should only be made in factories that comply with local labour and environmental laws. The company has a pre-approval process, where all new suppliers need to be approved by the CR team prior working with Burberry. One of Burberry’s strategic focuses is operational excellence in five areas, including healthy business partnerships, environmental excellence, excellence in people management, excellent products and service and contributing to society.
